TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION

Concorde Lead Acid Battery SDS
All Concorde Battery Corporation's Concorde RG® series and D8565 series, Chairman® AGM series, Lifeline® GPL series, and Sun Xtender® PVX series batteries are manufactured utilizing Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) technology. These Valve Regulated Sealed Lead-Acid (VRSLA) batteries are non-spillable and sealed with the electrolyte absorbed in the glass mat separator material.  They are also known as Valve Regulated Batteries (VRB), Valve Regulated Lead Acid (VRLA), Sealed Lead Acid Batteries (SLAB) and Recombinant Gas Lead Acid batteries.

Concorde’s VRLA have been tested in accordance with the vibration and pressure differential tests found in 49 CFR 173.159(f) and free flowing acid tests under 49 CFR 173.159a, the vibration and pressure differential test under IATA Packing Instruction 872, meet IATA Special provisions A48, A67, A164 & A183, and IMDG Special Provisions 238.1 & 238.2.  The batteries are securely packaged, protected from short circuits and labeled “Non-Spillable”.  Concorde VRLA batteries are exempt from DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations, IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, and International Maritime Organization (IMO) IMDG Code.

Classifications are as follows:

US DOT
Exempted from the requirements because batteries have passed the vibration and pressure differential performance tests, and ruptured case test for Non-Spillable -designation.

IMO
Exempted from the requirements because batteries have passed the vibration and pressure differential performance tests, and ruptured case test for Non-Spillable designation.  When packaged for transport, the terminals are protected from short circuit.

IATA
Exempted from the requirements because batteries have passed the vibration and pressure differential performance tests, and ruptured case test for Non-Spillable designation.
When packaged for transport, the terminals are protected from short circuit.  The words “Not Restricted” and the Special Provision numbers must be included in the description of the substance on the Air Waybill as required by 8.2.6, when an Air Waybill is issued.

ADR
Per Special Provision 598 Concorde’s VRLA batteries are not subject to the requirements of ADR when they are secured in such a way that they cannot slip, fall or be damaged and are suitably stacked, e.g. on pallets (or, if not on pallets, are provided with carrying devices). Concorde VRLA batteries have no dangerous traces of alkalis or acids on the outside and are protected against short circuits.

This notice is to clarify to shippers and transporters that Concorde RG® Series, Chairman®, Lifeline®, and Sun Xtender® batteries are determined to be in compliance with DOT HMR49 Non-Hazardous Materials, the International Air Transportation Association (IATA), Special Provisions S.P. A48, A67, A164, A183 & Packaging Instruction 872 and International Maritime Organization (IMO) IMDG S.P. 238.1 & 238.2. Therefore, these batteries are not restricted for shipment by air, sea or ground and are exempted from the hazardous material category. Please ensure that you follow the requirements of DOT, IATA and IMDG to ensure these exceptions remain applicable.
